Japan will next month begin trialling its first-ever hydrogen-powered train as the country looks to cut emissions from its high emitting transportation sector.

According to the Japan Times, East Japan Railway on Friday (Feb 18) unveiled its hydrogen-powered test train, equipped with a fuel cell and battery system.

Dubbed Hybari, East Japan Railway’s latest locomotive will feature technologies from both Hitachi and Toyota Motor Corporation, following a collaboration agreement inked in October 2020.

It has been reported that the train costs approximately $35m and can travel up to 140 kilometres at a top speed of 100km/h on a single fuelling of hydrogen.

The Japan Times believes that East Japan Railway will next month test run the two-car train on the Nanbu Line as it aims to commence commercial use in 2030.
